This isn't your typical textbook — it's a completely new way to learn Korean through a gripping historical romance you'll actually want to binge-read. Dive into an intense, addictive story that feels just like a K-drama, all while naturally improving your Korean. A language book has never been this fun.
Perfect For: K-drama lovers · Korean learners tired of childish storybooks · visual learners · upper-beginner to intermediate readers · fans of addictive historical romance
Bonus: Experience the story with a curated K-pop playlist — the very songs the author listened to while writing, selected to bring each scene to life like a K-drama.
I have now finished the first book in the four-volume series The Moon Caught in the Pine Tree for Korean learners. Overall, I thought this was a wonderful resource for English-speaking students of Korean at a high beginner level. The story was great fun and featured some beautiful illustrations. The text was presented like a script, with the English translation below each of the Korean lines. Part of me perhaps would have liked all the Korean text together and then the English translation after, as then you could concentrate on comprehending the Korean first, without your eye straying to the English below. But that's a very minor complaint and I just did my best to ignore the English unless I needed to check something. The story is supplemented by grammar explanations, song recommendations to accompany each chapter, and historical information. If you are learning Korean and love historical K-dramas, this is definitely a book to check out. Intermediate learners may find it a little easy at times, but because the story is good fun, it is still good practice even if reading it is not a major challenge. I will definitely read on and finish the series in between working through a harder YA Korean novel that I have on the go. I am giving this first book 4.5 stars.
