Film Review: Past Lives (2023) (Drama)

After losing touch, two childhood classmates with a magnetic connection wonder where destiny will take their friendship when they reunite as adults.

Past Lives is a film that got a lot of hype both from the public and in terms of awards when it released, but this was the first opportunity I've had to watch it. It was a quiet sort of film, focused on the three characters and their relationships, with nothing else much going on in terms of action or story. I appreciated the emotional drama and the exploration of the idea of 인연 (fate/karmic connection), and the cast did a wonderful job portraying the emotions of the characters. It was nicely shot too, with some great moments both in Seoul and in New York. However, it did feel slow at times; at least twice I glanced at my phone without bothering to pause it, knowing I wasn't going to miss much in that minute. Because of this, I am giving it 4 stars. If you like deep, reflective drama that focuses on psychology and emotion without a strong action element, this will definitely be a film you enjoy. But if you need a faster-paced style of storytelling, this one is probably not for you.
