Black Comedy
When hijackers seize a Japanese flight and demand to fly to Pyongyang, a mysterious mastermind hatches a zany scheme to reroute the plane to Seoul.
Good News is billed as a thriller on Netflix, but really it is more of a black comedy. To get the humour in this film, you do need a bit of a background understanding of the Korean War, tensions between north and south, and the complex and difficult relationship between Korea and Japan. If you have that knowledge, though, this is an entertaining, tongue-in-the-cheek tale that often had me laughing out loud. I enjoyed the way the film was presented, with actual events interspersed with characters' daydreams about potential outcomes. This is not a film that will make any of my top lists, but it was an enjoyable couple of hours and I am giving it 4 stars. Recommended if you don't mind your comedy being pretty black.
