Colony marks my first cinema trip for 2026. I suggested to my husband we go and see it was a Korean film (and with Ji Chang-wook), which appealed to me, and a zombie film, which appealed to him. In the end, we both enjoyed it. While I am not a big fan of English-language zombie films (unless there's a comedy element), I do enjoy the Korean version of the genre, on both the big screen and the small. I think this is because, unlike the US/UK films that go for big scare moments and cheap shocks, Korean zombie films actually have intelligent plots and a little more depth, and that was certainly true in this case. The scenario was compelling and well thought out, and the characters, too, had enough depth, at least in terms of the leads, for you to care about them and what would happen to them. The pacing of the film was good, with no major lulls once the action got started. The VFX/SFX were good and there were some nicely planned action sequences and key 'set' pieces, such as in the dry cleaning room, with the hanging clothing used to good effect in the fight scene. The cast all did a good job, and the film ended in a way that was satisfactory but still left a window of opportunity for more. I am giving it 4.5 stars. Definitely worth seeing if you are a fan of the genre.
