TV Review: Prison Playbook (2017) (Drama)

Prison Playbook (슬기로운 감빵생활)
2017
16 episodes

Drama
Netflix

With his major league baseball debut right around the corner, a star pitcher lands in prison and must learn to navigate his new world.

Prison Playbook was a decent drama in some respects, but what let it down for me was my difficulty in suspending my disbelief over a) how clean the prison was b) how easy it was for prisoners to wander around, meet in different locations etc. and c) how many of them were in there for crimes they didn't commit. I have an acquaintance who regularly goes into prisons for work, and from that person I have learnt that the situations and scenarios depicted in this drama are far from the truth of life in a prison. This knowledge makes it hard to fully sink into the drama, as it all seemed too unrealistic. I also struggled at times with the pacing; some episodes were full of action and interest, but others just seemed to be endless talk with not much happening. All up, I am giving it 4 stars. It was enjoyable in its way, and it featured some actors I like, but my inability to suspend my disbelief meant I couldn't fully immerse in this one.
