Book Review: 잔소리 고양이 by 모자쿠키 (Manhwa)

트위터 개설 열흘 만에 10만 팔로어 달성, 전 게시물마다 수천 건의 리트윗 및 수만 건의 ‘좋아요’ 기록 등 트위터 최대 화제작 ‘잔소리 고양이’가 이 땅의 만화 팬과 ‘집사’들을 찾아왔다. 동물 캐릭터에 강점을 가진 작가답게, 크라프트 배경 위에 담백하게 그려낸 고양이 캐릭터는 귀엽고 사랑스럽기 그지없다.

아무도 내게 관심이 없는 것만 같아 쓸쓸한 나날, ‘등짝을 후려치며’ 잔소리하던 부모님 혹은 친구의 푸근한 애정이 문득 그리워지는 어느 날… ‘츤데레’ 매력의 잔소리 고양이가 비단 반려동물을 기르는 사람이 아니더라도, 이 책을 펼치는 모든 이에게 따스한 위로와 감동, 나아가 잔잔한 웃음까지 선사해줄 것이다.

 

This book (called 'Nagging Cat' in English) was a cute read. The cat in question finds something new to nag its owner about in each chapter, from too much gaming to overspending on unnecessary items. This is essentially a comic, so it's heavy on illustrations with only minimal text. However, the text is pretty simple, and with the images too it is easy to follow even if a few words are unfamiliar, making this one accessible to high beginners. The only thing to watch out for is some 'cute' changes to spelling on a few words, such as ending with ㅇ, which might confuse you if you haven't seen it before. This is something I would recommend as a palate cleanser between reading harder books, as it is amusing and fun and easy to read. Overall, I am giving it 3.5 stars. I was torn between 3.5 and 4, but I feel it is more fun than majorly useful for language study, so I went with the slightly lower score since I am rating from a language-learning perspective.
