Aurelia Moirae never asked for power—or for the gods who carved her bloodline to come calling.

When her world collapses, Aurelia is dragged into Nyxarra, a mist-shrouded city ruled by blood bargains, ancient grudges, and magic long thought buried. What begins as a desperate attempt to save her brother quickly unravels into something far more dangerous.

With a haunted warrior at her side and a beautiful monster at her throat, Aurelia must face the stories etched into her blood—and the cost of daring to rewrite them.

Power is a curse. Love is a risk. And survival may cost her everything she has left.

The Thorns We Inherit was a middle-of-the-road romantasy for me. I didn't dislike it in any way, but I also didn't fall deeply in love with it. The premise of the story hit many of the standard tropes but still had an element of novelty and freshness to it. The characters were generally well-portrayed and three dimensional, and the world building was mostly well handled. I didn't immediately get behind the romance side of things, but that's not to say it was badly written; it simply didn't inspire me personally or make me invested in it or the characters. For my liking, the text was a little overwritten and flowery. When combined with fantasy elements this made things unnecessarily convoluted; simple prose style would have let the fantasy elements shine through more. I believe this is a debut work, though, so the author still has plenty of time to grow into their writing style. As for this series, I might not desperately seek out book two, but if I had the opportunity to read it, equally, I might give it a try to see how the story progresses. I am giving this one 3.5 stars. Worth checking out at least for die-hard romantasy fans.

I received this book as a free eBook ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
