『내 책상 위의 비밀』은 일기장, 안경, 스마트폰, 몽당연필, 지우개 같은 일상적인 물건을 소재로 아름다운 상상의 세계를 펼쳐 놓는 청소년소설이다. 십 대에게 연필, 지우개, 공책 같은 문구는 늘 쓰는 물건이라 특별한 존재가 아니다. 하지만 바로 그렇게 일상적인 물건이기 때문에 더더욱 간질간질 꿈결 같은 이야기가 펼쳐질 수도 있다.
The Secret on My Desk was a cute and fun read comprising five fantastical short stories. In one the narrator's older sister who loves reading turns into a pair of glasses. In another a boy downloads an app to help manage his daily tasks but it starts to take over, making decisions without him. This is a book I found in the young adult section at Kyobo, and I would say it's at the lower end of the young adult spectrum, perhaps a little closer to what we would class as 'middle grade'. While there are some fantasy elements, these stories are based on everyday items and everyday situations, which makes it a perfect read for intermediate Korean learners. The vocabulary is fairly standard, as is the grammar, so I was able to read reasonably fluidly, only pausing occasionally to check words I really couldn't deduce the meaning of from the context. If you are comfortably within the intermediate level for Korean, this is definitely a book I could recommend to help you get into reading native texts. As a language-study aid, I am giving it 4.5 stars.
