In the early Meiji era, Shujiro, once known as an undefeated samurai, decides to participate in a deadly survival game to save his family and villagers.
Last Samurai Standing was a drama my husband picked for us to watch together. At first I found it amusing, telling my husband it was designed for Japanese learners to practise numbers, since there was so much counting down in the opening episodes. However, then the story got going and I got more into the story and the action. One thing I did feel though was vibes of Rurouni Kenshin, and I found myself commenting to my husband, "Kenshin would have done such-and-such here". It felt a bit like that story meets Squid Game or Alice in Borderland. As it drew to a close, I wondered how they would wrap things up in the remaining time, and the answer was that they didn't; another series will be coming. My husband and I are invested enough that we will likely watch it when it releases, to see how things conclude. After the slightly slow start, the pacing of the show was good. The cinematography was enjoyable, and the casts' performances were good. I found the character of Futaba rather annoying, given how utterly useless she was. My favourite character is probably Kyojin, because he is the most mysterious, so I am interested in what his real motives will turn out to be. I am giving this first series 4.5 stars.
