TV Review: Beautiful Gong Shim (2016) (Rom-Com)

Beautiful Gong Shim (미녀 공심이)
2016
20 episodes

Rom-Com
Netflix

Needing funds to study art abroad, Gong Shim rents out her rooftop room to a pro bono lawyer, who begins shaking up her otherwise dispiriting life.

I put on Beautiful Gong Shim really as a palate cleanser between other shows. I didn't have high expectations, imagining it would just be a standard rom-com, so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. The story was interesting throughout and I particularly enjoyed the developing relationships between the characters. It tended a bit more towards melodrama in the second half, but by then I was invested and didn't mind when it went a little over the top in places. In some ways it was very self-aware of this and some of the jokes played into it. Min Namgung is an actor I like more and more every time I see one of his dramas. He is great at comedy but also has a good emotional range. I did think the series would have been best wrapped up in 18 episodes, though, as at 20 the ending felt a bit stretched, the last episode little more than filler. Still, it has a lot of positives and is a show that will make you smile as you watch, so I am giving it 4.5 stars.
