Transporting a mysterious shipment to London, the crew of a trading vessel find themselves trapped at sea with a vicious supernatural creature. (Synopsis)

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a film that sounds like a good idea but which ultimately fails on several levels. The most obvious issue is, of course, the lack of tension since anyone familiar with the book and/or adaptations of Dracula will know in advance how this voyage will end. The second issue is the representation of Dracula as a badly designed 'creature', showcasing little in the way of intelligence and therefore eliminating some of the key features of the character. Showing him as more human at times would have given him greater depth and raised the stakes. In every scene, I knew what would happen ahead of time. In fact, I even went out to the kitchen at one point and called out to my husband what I thought would happen next... and I was 100% correct. On the plus side, the cinematography was atmospheric and I liked the movie dark, murky vibe. Overall, though, I can only give it 2.5 stars at a push. It didn't fail entirely to be entertaining on a shallow level, but its flaws were too numerous to ignore.
