After the disastrous events in the Havenwood, Saffron Killoran’s revenge has slipped through her fingers. Still deep undercover within the Bloodmoon gang, she sees only one path forward: harness her long-dormant Timeweaver power to fix her most ruinous mistakes.

But Levan Celadon, now kingpin of the Bloodmoons, has discovered Saffron’s true identity. With old wounds reopening and a rival gang closing in, he questions the cause to which he has devoted his life – and the fate of the traitorous mage he loves.

Hot on their heels is Auria Marriosan, an ambitious rookie detective sent to stake out the Bloodmoons' rivals. Grieving the loss of her betrothed at the scarlet hand, she will stop at nothing to destroy both gangs. But when the case uncovers shocking revelations, she must find a way to bring all the corrupt players to justice.

In this cat-and-mouse game of trust and betrayal spanning continents, the missing Fifth Prophecy could hold the key to everything. But will Saffron’s attempt to unmake time cast her as a hero… or a villain? And just how far will her rivals go to stop her?

I struggled a little at the start of Turncloak. However, I think this was partly because we launched straight back into the story but I had only a general recollection of book one; I simply didn't recall at first the finer details of where the characters and plot had gotten to. After a few chapters, though, it began to come back to me and I was able to sink into the action. Overall, while I still found it enjoyable, book two didn't have quite the same magic as book one for me. The action felt more bitty, the pacing a bit erratic at times, and I didn't feel the relationship between Levan and Saffron continued as well as it had first been established in book one. At first I wondered if everything would wrap in two books, but that turned out not to be the case. Based on my feelings about book two, I would probably read on to finish the story in book three, as I still like the story and characters. It was only that this second volume didn't flow quite as smoothly to my mind as the first did. I am giving it 4 stars.

I received this book as a free eBook ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
