The emotions of a celebrity and her interpreter get lost in translation as they travel the world filming a TV show. Will love find its own language?
Can This Love be Translated? was a series that instantly appealed to me as a language learner. The premise was interesting and allowed for the exploration of many different ideas of how translation is required in relationships: not only speech, but also beliefs, upbringing and values and past trauma. To understand someone else, it isn't just about what they say but also our knowledge and understanding of what makes them tick as a person. I found this a worthwhile idea to explore and thought the series handled it pretty well. The style of the show was good fun, incorporating some slightly more fantastical elements, and I liked the chemistry between the characters. The only thing that spoilt it a little for me was the final episode. Things were wrapping up well, but then we were suddenly thrown all these additional revelations about Cha Mu-hee, all of which felt superfluous to the story and which then never had time to go anywhere anyway. I think it would have been better if these had been left out. However, that was a minor irritation, so I am still giving this one 4.5 stars. Recommended if you like quirky romances with deeper themes and a bit of emotional drama.
