Magic has long been outlawed in Auréal . Odile has always known she’d be the one to restore it.
Raised by a sorcerer, Odile has spent years preparing for the heist of a lifetime. It’s perfectly simple. Impersonate a princess, infiltrate the palace, steal the king's enchanted crown and restore magic to the kingdom.
But when the King is unexpectedly murdered, she’s forced to recruit the help of Marie d'Odette, the real princess, and the two begin to unravel a web of lies and deceit that leaves Odile uncertain of who to trust.
Soon though Odile must decide – her mission or the girl she’s falling for?
The fate of the Kingdom depends on her making the right choice. . .
A Treachery of Swans had a lot going for it: a fun plot, twisting the well-known Swan Lake, an understated sapphic love interest, a well-built world of fading magic, and plenty of twists, turns and treachery along the way. The story moved nicely along from the beginning, and I was immediately caught up in Odile's story. The only thing that spoilt this book for me a little was the ending, and I will try to explain why without revealing too much in the way of spoilers. Basically, near the end we are told a certain quest must be undertaking in order to finalise one aspect of a HEA. I thought, 'Oh, that must mean a second book is coming to conclude things'. That wasn't the case though. Instead, a very brief epilogue simply tells us the quest was undertaken successfully and then all was well. There would definitely have been scope here to journey with the characters, so it was disappointing that we just had to accept it had all happened off the page. Nonetheless, the part of the story we did get in detail was good, so I am giving this 4 stars.
I received this book as a free eBook ARC via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
